 2022 Into The Mystic

Stories formulate our cultural and spiritual identities. Throughout history societies myths and lore have been forged to vilify the feminine. Inspired by the romantic style of J. W. Waterhouse, this series is a sensual exploration of what it means to be an embodied modern woman. Using a unique combination of charcoal and oil on wood these pieces emanate dark moods and illuminated light. As society and identity twist and morph under the pressure of outdated ideologies a diamond emerges, strength and self acceptance.

OUT

100 x 60 cm

Light chases darkness

The waking mind rests in dreams

The sun reaches for the moon

Life is cradled by death

Duality is infinity

We spin forever

Reaching out

Into the unknown

Loving The Darkest Parts

100 x 60 cm

“I used to be afraid of the dark” I say.

"I used to fear I would never be fully understood" My demon responds.

We are our own monsters. To know oneself is to take on the darkness that resides within. Cradle the tenderest of wounds, until they are fully integrated. ‘Loving the Darkest Parts’ is a self-portrait of my demon and I in a moment of unity.

The Seduction of the White Dragon

120 x 60 cm

Our society is wounded, the solution is healing.

This is a battle of power, over and under, addiction and love. She is a guardian to guide the lost souls to the other side.

Creation of a new God to protect us from the dangers of the modern world.

Turning Inwards

120 x 80 cm

I am a reflection of my environment. The balance between dark and light, inward and outward. As a fire burns both in me and around me, I gain perspective turning inward, anticipating new growth.

The last of the Standing Giants

120 x 60 cm

Inspired by the great red cedar trees on the west coast of Canada. This painting is for the land defenders.

I believe the feminine is nature, the wounded relationship exists both in our culture and in our exploitation of our environment.

Her hands outstretched as if raising a question.

Endangered blue Herons fly around her head and beneath her grows a tree plantation.

The Art of Disappearing

50 x 50 cm

Have you ever closed your eyes and felt your body disappear?
Dissolved into the woods
Into the blackness of an alley
Held your breath so long, you simply vanished from a conversation?
Like a dream somewhere in between existing and sleeping
Hand outstretched she beckons to you
Wrapping her cloak around the two of you for protection
Warmth surrounds you
As you exhale into her comfort

The Harpy

60 x 60 cm

Greek mythology and other folklore tell the tale of the Harpy; she is a vile and devilish wind spirit whose purpose is to invoke torture. This legend has evolved over time. Here I depict an alternative perspective. She is a creature of captivation, resting peacefully in her nest, far above the fearful whispers. Humanity tends to condemn what we do not understand. The truth sits spherically, in the middle of all perspectives.

The Vessel

50 x 30 cm

In a world that exploits the female body, self pleasure is an act of rebellion and self love is liberation.

Lady of the Night

120 x 80 cm

Meet me in the garden

Under a new moon

To watch the night Blooming flowers

Blossom beneath me and you

Pans Pool

110 x 70

In the distance you hear a soft melody

following it through the dark woods

Emerging in a clearing ….

… Pan plays louder

Hypnotized, you begin to dance

Venturing closer

The water is cold, you slide in

You howl

Wildness takes over

Oh Joy

Remembering

The purpose

Is play

In

800 x 800 cm

Sometimes you must go in to get out.

This is the beginning, the entry a portal into my world
